Dear URRA Members, and potential members
We hope this message finds you well. At the Umhlanga Rate Payers Association (URRA), we consider it vital to address an important matter that impacts all of us as stakeholders within our local community., the greater Umhlanga Area, which contributes more than 28% to the Ethekwini Municipality. This message aims to clarify our stance in response to the recent rates strike initiated by the Westville Rate Payers Association.
Firstly I would like to point out that they have made an application for an interdict, which will be heard on the 1 Nov 2023 – this does not mean that they have won an interdict. In this regard a previous application of this nature was applied for in Linden, Johannesburg, and the case was thrown out of court with cost to pay. It’s crucial to acknowledge that withholding rates is an action that contradicts the law, and it should only be considered as a last resort under extreme circumstances.
While we recognize the Westville Rate Payers Association’s right to express dissatisfaction and voice concerns, we maintain our belief that there are more effective and lawful avenues to address these issues. Engaging in open conversations, submitting petitions, and utilizing appropriate channels enable us to collaboratively discover solutions that benefit the entire community.
In summary, URRA remains steadfast in its conviction that withholding rates is not a lawful course of action and can yield unintended repercussions. We pledge to continue engaging with local authorities, advocating for the community’s interests, and pursuing lawful resolutions to address any concerns. We urge you to stand with us in upholding the law, preserving essential services, and nurturing a thriving and prosperous community.
Your ongoing support and understanding are greatly appreciated.
Warm regards,
Terri MacLarty
Director and Chairman
