URRA Appeals Approval of Lagoon Drive “Bingo Hall”: We Need Your Help to Preserve our Village

The uMhlanga Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (URRA) is officially appealing the eThekwini Municipality’s recent decision to approve a large-scale gambling facility at 4 Lagoon Drive. Despite nearly 1,000 objections from our community, the “special consent” for an entertainment venue featuring 150 electronic bingo terminals has been granted.
We are not standing by. We have formally lodged an appeal to protect the character, safety, and property values of our village. However, to win this battle, we need more than just spirit—we need your expertise and financial support.

The Battle for uMhlanga

For decades, uMhlanga Rocks has been defined as a premier, family-oriented coastal destination. The introduction of a high-intensity gambling facility in the heart of our tourism and residential zone is fundamentally inconsistent with that identity.

Our primary concerns remain:

  • Increased Crime & Security Risks: Gambling facilities of this scale can attract opportunistic crime, undermining the safety efforts of our local residents and businesses.
  • Traffic Congestion: Lagoon Drive is already under significant pressure. The infrastructure simply cannot support the intensified traffic and parking overflow this venue would bring.
  • Economic Impact: Many owners believe local residential property values have already begun to soften due to this proposal. This facility risks deepening that negative trend.
  • Procedural Flaws: Many of our valid objections were either inadequately addressed or entirely missing from the formal objector register.

Call for Volunteer Legal Assistance

This appeal is a complex legal undertaking. We are calling upon the professional members of our community to help us hold the line.
If you are a practicing attorney, advocate, or a retired judge with experience in municipal law, town planning, or administrative law, we need your volunteer assistance. Your guidance will be instrumental in ensuring our community’s voice is heard at the highest level of the appeal process.

Support the Legal Fund

Filing fees and expert legal counsel are costly. To fight this effectively, we must raise funds to cover the R5,500-per-appeal fees and the associated costs of a sustained legal challenge.

How you can contribute:

Donate: Every contribution, no matter the size, goes directly toward our legal and appeal fund.

Don’t Stand By

uMhlanga is our home. It belongs to the families, the businesses, and the residents who have built it into the world-class destination it is today. We cannot allow its future to be compromised by a decision that lacks social license.
