Positive developments are underway for the Umhlanga Police Station in Prestondale, following an oversight visit by Minister of Public Works Dean Macpherson, accompanied by senior Public Works officials and SAPS representatives. The visit was prompted by Ward 35 Councillor Bradley Singh, who has long advocated for improved infrastructure at the station.
As a result of the visit, the Minister has committed to several key upgrades to address long-standing concerns:
◼ Immediate installation of a perimeter fence to enhance station security
◼ Repairs to the main gate to ensure proper controlled access
◼ Full restoration of the generator, critical for uninterrupted service during outages
Importantly, Minister Macpherson also confirmed the start of a process to construct a permanent, purpose-built police station, replacing the current prefabricated facility. This long-overdue commitment represents a meaningful investment in both public safety and service delivery in Umhlanga.
Councillor Singh welcomed the announcement, noting, “After years of advocacy by residents, we are finally seeing action. This station is now a priority, and these upgrades will greatly improve safety and service delivery in Umhlanga.”
